The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Western Australia is proud to have been presented the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s 2020 Community Partnership Resources Sector Award for Excellence.

The award recognises a partnership between the RFDS, Karara Mining Limited and the Shires of Mingenew, Morawa and Perenjori who joined forces in 2012 to provide residents with access to free dental services 25 weeks of the year.

RFDS Manager of Primary Health and Dental Clinics Amanda Bedford and Karara Mining Limited’s Principal Advisor for Community and Heritage Greg Payne were presented the award by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston at Dumas House in Perth on Tuesday, 1 December.

Ms Bedford said being presented the award is a fantastic achievement by all parties and recognises the lasting impact and outcomes delivered by the tri-sector partnership.

“This free service improves access for those living in these three towns who otherwise would have to travel out of their locality to access alternative dental services, many of whom cannot afford to see a private dentist,” she said.

“Many people don’t realise that good oral health supports the wider wellbeing of these towns. Our work in these towns is also about providing education where our dental team visit local schools and daycare centres to talk about the importance of good diet and clean teeth in preventing tooth decay.

“We are thankful for this partnership which enables us to effectively take our services where the greatest need is to ensure health equity in rural and remote communities - this is what the Flying Doctor has always been about.”
