Acute Telehealth Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has a long and proud history of delivering remote consultations via radio and telephone. Starting in the 1920s with pedal-powered radio units, through to today's virtual consultations and electronic medical records, our telehealth services continue to provide a mantle of safety to patients in remote locations.
The Acute Telehealth Service manages calls across regional, rural, and remote Queensland. This includes supporting Remote Area Nurses (RANs) in nurse-only posts, first aiders on ships or mine sites, and directly from patients travelling rurally or living on remote properties.
RFDS doctors provide a 24-hour medical consultation service that can be accessed by calling 1300 697 337 (1300 MY RFDS). Telehealth doctors can provide various support from minor illnesses or injuries to major emergencies, offering advice until in-person medical help arrives.
The Acute Telehealth Service works alongside the Medical Chest Service, where patients on rural properties can receive advice on using medications from the RFDS Medical Chest to treat a variety of medical conditions.
