Description

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) offers a Dental Service through the Mobile Dental Unit (MDU) to assist rural and remote Queenslanders with access to dental care. The MDU, which has two state-of-the-art dental surgeries, serves upwards of 70 patients per week and offers a range of services, from preventive care to extraction and houses an onboard orthopantomogram (OPG) unit. The MDU aims to address the immediate need for dental care in communities within QLD and improve overall health by providing a regular ongoing service.

The Role   
We are currently seeking an experienced Dentist to lead the MDU as a Principal Dentist. This role is a permanent, position with options to be filled full-time or part-time as part of a job share arrangement. The role will involve a mix of clinical work on rotation followed by a mixture of administration/leadership duties.

On each rotation, the Principal Dentist is supported by three Dental Assistants and one Dentist. Your rotations could see you support QLD communities from Cherbourg up to Collinsville and across to Camooweal and many other beautiful places in between.
In your role as a clinician, you will conduct clinical examinations, diagnose issues, develop treatment plans, deliver treatments, educate patients about oral health, maintain comprehensive clinical records, and provide post-treatment support to patients.  As the leader of the MDU, you will:

  • Provide support and guidance to Dentists, Dental Assistants and the MDU Coordinator
  • Manage requirements for workforce planning and recruitment of Dentists and Dental Assistants
  • Engage with clinical governance processes and ensure compliance with RFDS clinical policies and procedures
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget for the RFDS Oral Health Service
  • Participate and organise staff training activities related to clinical service delivery
  • Collaborate with members of your team to improve service delivery, service reporting, research and service expansion
Who are we looking for?   
It is essential that you possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and that you can lead positively in an environment of remote teamwork. You will successfully demonstrate:
  • Registration with AHPRA, as a Dentist
  • Four year’s post-graduate experience in a general Dentistry
  • Well-developed management skills including demonstrated skills in leadership and decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to implement change
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices within a dental clinic
  • Current Queensland Health Radiography Licence
  • Experience in a rural and remote practice
  • Ability to handle challenging operational situations in a calm and rational manner
  • Proven clinical skills in managing a broad range of oral health issues
  • Experience in using a clinical patient record system (RFDS uses Titanium)
  • Evidence of annual certification in Basic Life Support and a Current First Aid Certificate (AED) (or willing to obtain prior to commencement)
