Many people living in remote and regional communities have limited, if any, access to dental services and are required to travel extensively for dental treatment. Thanks to a unique partnership with the QCoal Foundation, for over four years the RFDS has been delivering a mobile dental clinic throughout regional Queensland. The service operates with a five-person dental team from an 18-wheel semi-trailer and includes two clinics, a sterilisation area, a reception desk, kitchenette, and the latest panoramic x-ray equipment. The QCoal Community Dental Service has travelled over 54,000 kilometres to visit 21 communities and has treated more than 8,000 patients.

The QCoal Community Dental Service plays a vital role in providing remote and regional communities with access to oral health services. The service is delivered at no out-of-pocket cost to patients but relies on donations to keep it on the road.
Donations can be made by completed the pre-paid envelopes available on board, by phoning 07 3860 1100 to pledge your donation or by visiting flyingdoctor.org.au/dental.

The QCoal Community Dental Service is a fully equipped mobile dental surgery featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including an OPG machine. It is staffed by qualified dentists and dental assistants who provide a wide range of services direct from the mobile unit, including:

  • Oral health maintenancem
  • X-rays and extractions
  • Treatment for acute or pre-existing conditions
  • Treatment for gum disease
  • Referral to specialist dental services

Where does the service visit in 2017?

The Service travels a scheduled route each year and stays for two weeks in each town. All treatments are free to any patient with a Medicare Card, with no out of pocket expenses for patients with private health insurance.

If the necessary treatment cannot be provided, patients are referred to an appropriate service provider. The service will continue to expand with demand so please check back if the dental service is not currently visiting your area.
