Brisbane Airport: a gateway to life-saving care

Brisbane Airport plays a vital role in connecting Queenslanders to urgent, specialist medical care through its long-standing partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section).

From premature babies and critically ill children to patients suffering heart attacks, Brisbane Airport knows that in an emergency, every minute matters.

Last year alone, more than 4,600 patients from 60 regional, rural and remote Queensland communities were flown by the Flying Doctor to Brisbane Airport for care.

Since becoming a Principal Partner in 2009, Brisbane Airport has also contributed more than $4.5 million to the RFDS, helping to equip our aircraft and crew with essential aeromedical technology.

During this time, RFDS aircraft have landed in Brisbane more than 51,000 times, supporting thousands of life-saving patient transfers.

Building Queensland’s next generation Aeromedical Hub at Brisbane Airport

The partnership is now entering an exciting new chapter with the construction of a state-of-the-art Aeromedical Hub at Brisbane Airport – set to become the most advanced facility of its kind in the state.

Each year, more than 5,000 Queenslanders are transferred to Brisbane’s tertiary hospitals by the RFDS. The new base will feature a world-class patient transfer facility and a 12-bed short stay clinical unit, allowing patients to move on and off aircraft in comfort and enabling overnight stays when needed.

This facility will significantly enhance patient experience, clinical capability and the efficiency of healthcare delivery.
