The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) is urging communities to stay alert, calm and prepared this snake season.

Dr Bill Nimo at Charleville Base

Each year, the Flying Doctor responds to nearly 200 suspected or confirmed snake bites, many of them in rural and remote communities where help can be hours away.

RFDS Senior Aeromedical Consultant Dr Bill Nimo is based in Charleville and said as temperatures rise, so do snake encounters.

“As the weather warms up, we’re more likely to see snakes out and about,” Dr Bill said.

“It’s important to remember that snakes don’t actually want to bite us.

“Most bites happen when people accidentally surprise them or try to handle them.

“A bit of common sense can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.”

Dr Nimo said simple precautions and calm decision-making can significantly reduce your risk of being bitten.

“If you see a snake nearby, the main thing is don’t panic,” he said.

“Don’t try to chase it or kill it — just back away slowly and give it space.

“If you’re ever bitten, call Triple Zero (000) straight away. If it’s safe, apply a firm pressure bandage and keep the affected limb still to help slow the spread of the venom. Try not to move around too much until help arrives.”

He said if you see a snake hanging around your home or yard, call a local snake catcher to have it safely removed.

District wildlife and snake controller Gregory James Keyes said this year has already been one of the busiest for snake-related call-outs.

During his career, he has come face-to-face with some of the most venomous snakes, including copperheads, death adders, tigers, and red-belly black snakes.

“This year has been a very busy year for snake encounters and call-outs across Australia, especially due to the hot weather conditions,” Greg said.

“Snakes can be found in toilets, under sinks, inside gumboots or shoes, in hollow logs, long grass or woodpiles.

“So, if you are out bushwalking, running, gardening, or your children are playing in the backyard, it cannot be stressed enough the importance of having a snake bite kit ready.”
