When Gail Hills walked into the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) Townsville Base for a two-week temp job she had no idea it would turn into two decades of dedication, growth and unforgettable moments.

Growing up in Townsville, Gail has always been passionate about supporting her community. So its no surprise that she takes pride in helping raise awareness of the RFDS, especially in Townsville.

“It’s surprising that lots of people don’t realise we have a RFDS base in Townsville,” Gail said.

“Which is why I like to make sure, along with the rest of the team, that our community know that we are here!”

To help build this awareness, the RFDS Picnic with the Planes was held in Townsville last year and ended up being our biggest event of the year.

“The event was absolutely magnificent!” she said.

“We had over a thousand people in attendance.”

The event created a strong sense of community for the Townsville base and broadened awareness of the service and its presence across the region.

As part of her role, Gail frequently attends cheque handovers and meets with community members at fundraisers to strengthen connections and acknowledge their contributions to the RFDS.

“We have so many lovely community fundraisers in our community,” she said.

“Blankets of Love is run by a group of ladies who donate these gorgeous quilts for us to give to patients.

“It’s special to be able to gift one of these to a child that looks a bit scared and see their eyes light up when you let them know it’s theirs.”

It’s creating these kinds of moments that Gail cherishes most.

“In my role, I don’t see many patients, but when I do, I like to make them feel comfortable and support the nurses by looking after family or escorts,” she said.

“Often, due to the stress of the situation, you’ll find escorts who don’t know what to do, how to help or even where to stand.

“I like to show them where the bathroom is and offer kids some stickers or colouring-in to distract them.

“It’s the little things that can make a difference during what is often a very difficult time.”

Over the years, Gail has watched the organisation evolve, from welcoming new faces to introducing the Townsville base’s very own engineers.

"Watching the RFDS evolve over the years has kept the job exciting and ever-changing,” she said.

“But what has kept me here for so many years are the people; our little family.

“We’re a small base, a bit cozy, but we all get on and have a great sense of camaraderie.”

Her biggest takeaway, and what motivates her daily, is the understanding that every person across the RFDS contributes to the delivery of our essential services.

“No matter what part of the organisation we’re involved in, we are all making a difference to the lives of the people we serve,” she said.

Whether she’s supporting crews, comforting families or strengthening community ties, Gail is trailblazing a standard of care that embodies the spirit of the RFDS.
