Telehealth working to keep men healthy

In some of Queensland’s most remote locations, getting medical help when you need it can prove difficult.

While emergency retrieval by the RFDS is an option for serious conditions, for people living a long way from a doctor and in need of general GP advice, a telehealth consultation can often be the first step.

The RFDS (Queensland Section) provides telehealth services to rural and remote Queensland and it’s a service being embraced by more and more men.

Medical Lead for Telehealth Dr Anna Bowen says it’s sometimes difficult for men to prioritise their health, particularly when they’re working in environments like rural stations, that operate around the clock.

“Calling our 1300 MYRFDS (1300 697 337) number enables men to have a private medical consult in the comfort of their own home without the need to travel,” Dr Bowen said.

“This is particularly appealing to those working out on rural and remote properties, allowing them to seek help earlier and get on top of any medical issues quickly.

“Through virtual care in remote Queensland Health clinics, we’re also able to provide patient assessments and interpret vital sign observations, blood tests and ECGs.

“We can plan a course of treatment and help nurses manage a wide variety of health conditions, from minor problems to major life threatening emergencies.

“Our patients tells us the RFDS acute telehealth service is their lifeline and they would be lost without it.”

Almost 40 percent of men’s RFDS (Queensland Section) telehealth consultations are with those aged 40 to 70, an age bracket when men tend to proactively seek medical advice.

This week is Men’s Health Week (15 – 21 June), offering the chance for men to think about their health holistically and make sure they’re taking the right steps for themselves.

All up, the RFDS telehealth team has carried out close to 10,000 men’s consultations in the past year; an important service for people who may have otherwise gone without.

“There’s great comfort in knowing there’s a highly skilled doctor available at the end of the phone, 24 hours a day, giving men the confidence to live and work in these rural and remote Queensland communities,” Dr Bowen said.
