Victoria Nancarrow is at her happiest meeting people.

The new Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) Community Engagement coordinator splits her time between her home base at Bollon and the RFDS Charleville base, but she can also be spotted at a whole range of different locations across the region.

Victoria joined the RFDS earlier this year and has hit the ground running with a range of community engagement opportunities where she’s been able to talk to people about the work the organisation does.

“I really enjoy meeting people and take a lot away from the volunteering and community passion they show,” Victoria said.

“Community engagement isn’t a desk job, it’s about saying hello, making a cuppa, being present, shaking a hard-working hand and saying thank you.

“The best part about being on the road so much is the destination.

“I get to hear stories and share tears with strangers who become friends and hear first hand how the RFDS has helped them.

“A young boy told me how the RFDS saved his life, and he will forever be grateful to the doctors, ambulance crew and remote clinicians who were there for him.

“I also hear about community members who make monthly donations, those who use our medical chests and people who remain tireless volunteers.

“It really is a privilege to be out and about representing the RFDS.”

Victoria is part of a Community Engagement team that’s spread across Queensland, attending more than 250 events a year and also transporting the organisation’s full-sized King Air B200 aeromedical simulator to everything from schools to careers fairs and community events.

They cover a lot of distance but for Victoria it’s a great part of the job.

“The area is large but the way I look at it, it’s just down the road,” Victoria said.

“I’m partial to the landscape and birdlife so enjoy the time I get to travel across this amazing region.”
