The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RDFS) is planning an exciting and essential upgrade to our ageing fleet of B200 aircraft.
For nearly two decades, our B200s have supported our operations by safely transporting patients and our crew to some of the most remote communities in Queensland. But as these aircraft age, they require more resources, time, and manpower to maintain, affecting operational efficiency.
To continue delivering the finest care across Queensland, upgrading our fleet is vital.
After extensive research, the KA260C has been identified as the ideal replacement and an improvement on the current B200 model.
Like the B200, the KA260C can use smaller, unsealed airstrips that our B360 and B350 aircraft cannot access, allowing us to reach communities where others can’t.
However, the KA260C also introduces advanced technology, which improves navigation in low visibility situations, increasing the likelihood that our crews can land safely, even when weather or light make conditions difficult.
The aircraft’s enhanced power and faster climb rate mean shorter flight times, providing an advantage during critical medical transfers.
RFDS Deputy Head of Flying Operations, Nick Tully, sees firsthand how critical aircraft capability is to patient outcomes.
“The tyranny of distance is very real out here. Without the right aircraft, it can delay care that people often can’t wait for,” Nick said.
“We’re not just upgrading machines - we’re elevating our commitment to safety and service excellence.”
The introduction of the KA260C also aligns with the capability of our new Aeromedical Training Academy in Bundaberg, which already supports training for this aircraft variant.
This training capability means that the majority of pilot training can be met within our own facility, significantly reducing the need for external training resources and associated costs.
Your gift this Christmas can help us bring home the first RFDS KA260C and keep the Flying Doctor soaring across Queensland skies, saving lives for years to come.
Every donation helps ensure that location is never a barrier to accessing world-class healthcare.
