For everyone it’s a journey without a map and at times it can feel like a tough road to travel.
All parents have different experiences bringing up their kids but the one thing they all have in common, is the challenge of navigating a life that will never be the same again.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) has launched a Circle of Security Parenting program across Central Queensland to work with parents who are looking for additional guidance on how best to support their child.
Manager Central West and Outback Mental Health Donna Ross said the introduction of the service has been positive with plenty of interest from local communities.
“Circle of Security is an early childhood attachment program designed to be delivered over eight sessions for parents and caregivers of children four months of age through to six years old,” Donna said.
“Importantly, the program is also successfully delivered to caregivers of 0–18-year-olds because it encourages reflective capacity of caregivers and empowers them to explore parenting in a safe, hopeful, and exciting context.
“We’re all hardwired to feel secure, and the Circle of Security program gives parents the skills to recognise these moments with their child.”
It’s free of charge and doesn’t require a referral from a GP. Participants can self-refer, as the sessions are not clinical treatment but instead provide a supportive space for parents and caregivers to reflect on and strengthen their relationship with their child.
“We know parents gain confidence as they learn and find new ways of being in their current relationship with their child.
“It’s never too late to build security and connection.”
The Circle of Security sessions run for between an hour and an hour and a half and are delivered face to face in Longreach and via telehealth in Winton, Barcaldine, Blackall/Tambo, Boulia and Diamantina.
