Today (3 July 2025) marks a major milestone for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS), as Rockhampton Base celebrates 30 years of delivering vital healthcare to rural and remote Queenslanders.

Since its establishment, the base has grown into one of the busiest in the state, with the Rockhampton crew transferring more than 2,700 patients each year and flying more than 1.5 million kilometres every year.

While technology, aircraft and facilities have evolved over the past three decades, one thing has remained constant: the passion and commitment of the people behind the scenes.

One of those people is Trish whose 22-year journey at the Rockhampton Base embodies the heart of the RFDS.

Now serving as Base Support Manager, Trish has been a constant through many milestones, including fleet upgrades, clinical advances, and the opening of the dedicated Patient Transfer Facility in 2015.

Originally from Brisbane, Trish’s career with the RFDS began at the Brisbane Base 27 years ago, drawn by the opportunity to work for an Australian icon, and she has never looked back.

After spending time at several bases across Queensland, Trish was offered a permanent role in Rockhampton, and although the summers are hot, she quickly fell in love with the place and its people.

“It’s big enough to have everything you need, but small enough that you don’t feel lost. And the winter weather is beautiful,” she said.

In her current role, Trish plays a crucial behind-the-scenes part, ensuring everything runs smoothly for the operational crews.

“My job is to support the team so they can do theirs,” she said.

“That means keeping facilities running, managing supplies, coordinating contractors, finances, workplace safety, compliance and more."

For Trish, seeing the real-world impact of the service on families, patients, and the wider community is what keeps her motivated.

“I am in awe of our dedicated professionals,” Trish said.

“Their care and commitment support the well-being of our community.

“Hearing patients' stories of survival and gratitude towards our service fills me with immense pride.”

Team celebrating 30 years

To the next generation of RFDS team members, Trish’s message is simple but heartfelt.

“Be proud of the incredible work you do and be the smiling face that both patients and colleagues are happy to see.”

As the Rockhampton Base marks its 30th year, Trish’s story reminds us that a big part of the Flying Doctor’s success is thanks to those behind the scenes.

It’s a reminder that care doesn’t just happen in the air; it starts with those who keep us ready on the ground.
