Description
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is seeking a Senior or Mental Health Clinician with exceptional personal drive and comprehensive therapeutic evidence-based counselling skills to join the Far North Mental Health and Wellbeing Service to provide culturally appropriate psychological therapies in remote locations in Far North Queensland.
In this role, you will be committed to client-centred care and to improving the welfare of people in the communities we serve. In remote locations, you will work with locals from all cultures and have the freedom to provide care in a way that suits their needs.
In addition to being highly adaptable, you are a skilled and respectful communicator, resilient, and passionate about supporting mental health and well-being services. To be successful in the role you will have;
- Registration with AHPRA or membership of the AASW
- Formal qualifications in Psychology, Social Work (Accredited with AASW), Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing (Suitable for Mental Health credentialing)
- Extensive post-graduate experience in a relevant clinical field
- Demonstrated experience in brief interventions, and therapeutic counselling with clients across the lifespan
- Demonstrated experience and respectful understanding of cultural diversity including traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views of health and wellness
The role
Based in Cairns, this rewarding position will see you fly in and out of Cape York communities. You will work in the community Monday to Thursday, and every second week you will have an administration day to be worked at RFDS Cairns Base. You will be required to stay overnight in the communities we visit (up to 3 nights per week), where we will provide you with suitable accommodations and additional daily allowances. In this position, you will work 8 days per fortnight on a full-time basis on a contract that runs until February, 2024.
What does a typical day look like?
By joining our team, you could see yourself flying over to Kowanyama the traditional lands of the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront (or Kokomnjen) and Kunjen people and;
- Working with the community to deliver and develop culturally appropriate holistic services
- As the clinician in the community, you will be responsible for the intake, triage, assessment and ongoing treatment of any clients referred to the program
- Providing a range of evidence-based clinical interventions
- Undertaking complex holistic clinical assessments
- Conducting case reviews
- Collaborating with other service providers supporting our interagency networks

Successful candidates will be subject to a police check and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver's licence. Before the appointment, you will be required to provide certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases. You will also be required to complete the RFDS credentialing process.
