Description

With its Dental Service, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) assists rural and remote Queenslanders with access to dental care. Our dedicated Dental team provide services to communities across Queensland in the Mobile Dental Unit (MDU).
The MDU is an 18-wheel semitrailer housing two state-of-the-art dental surgeries. The MDU serves upwards of 70 patients per week, with the capacity to offer a range of services varying from a preventive check and clean through to extraction with the aid of our onboard orthopantomogram or OPG unit. This service addresses the immediate need for dental care within QLD communities and works towards improving overall health in these regions by providing regular ongoing service.
The MDU is staffed by RFDS Dentists and Dental Assistants who have a passion for delivering quality oral health services in rural and remote Queensland.

The Role

Our team is currently looking for a highly adaptable and friendly Dental Assistant to join the MDU team. You will have a strong desire to promote best practise, enjoy a laugh and have an easy-going nature.
This role is a permanent, part-time position (0.5 FTE) that works a roster of 2 weeks on rotation and 4 weeks off. While on rotation, an RFDS Dental Assistant could support one of two dentists or manage the reception for the MDU. A team of five (2 Dentists and 3 Dental Assistants) support each new community during their rotation. Your rotations could see you support communities from Cherbourg up to Collinsville and across to Camooweal and many other beautiful places in between.

The Dental Assistant provides clinical support to Dentists through the provision of clinically safe and effective dental services to patients including patient triage, appointment bookings, chairside clinical support, patient records management, facility maintenance and the effective sterilisation of equipment infection control standards. On a typical day on the truck, you will assist the treating Dentists with-

  • Comprehensive dental treatments; including preventive treatments
  • General restorative treatments and extractions
  • Treatment for acute or pre-existing conditions

Who are we looking for?

To be successful in this role, you will be a person who strives to deliver exceptional service and care in line with organisational and MDU objectives. With a sense of adventure, you will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and will have the ability to operate effectively in a remote team environment, contributing positively to the operations and working relationships of the MDU.
You will successfully demonstrate:
  • Certificate III in Dental Assisting
  • Knowledge and professional skills in dental assisting with a minimum of 2 years of experience
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of infection control principles
  • Ability to handle challenging operational situations calmly and rationally
  • Up-to-date knowledge of best practices within a dental clinic
  • Current First Aid Certificate + Annual CPR refresher

It is highly regarded to have-
  • Intra and Extra Radiation Licence
  • Certificate III in Sterilisation
  • Knowledge of “Titanium” Dental software programme
  • Previous experience working with remote and culturally diverse communities
