About the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section)
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) has been providing aeromedical services to communities across Queensland for over 90 years, fuelled by a vision to improve the health of people in remote, rural, and regional Queensland. RFDS provides a comprehensive range of primary health care, dental, and mental health services to 79 rural and remote communities that would otherwise have difficulty accessing regular healthcare services. In delivering over 95,000 episodes of care each year, RFDS employs over 500 staff across Queensland including medical, nursing, allied health professionals, pilots, maintenance engineers and mechanics, management, professional support, and administrative staff; placing significant emphasis on building the capability of its diverse workforce.
RFDS Queensland Section has its Head Office in Brisbane and maintains nine operational bases in regional centres across the State. Each base, with the exception of Longreach, has an aviation presence. The RFDS in Queensland is also part of the national RFDS federated organisation and contributes expertise and resources in developing common policies and approaches to national issues.
About the General Manager Aviation – Commercial and Strategy
The role of General Manager (GM) Aviation – Commercial and Strategy will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for delivering strategic projects for Aviation in line with the Toward 100Strategy, budget management of this high-cost area of the organisation, and driving commercial opportunities aligned to the current growth strategy.
The GM Aviation – Commercial and Strategy will encompass accountabilities related to, Commercial Operations of Aviation, Strategic Aviation Projects, and Logistics Operations Control. A key focus will be strategic workforce planning and commercial responsibility and viability of the Aviation function.
Key Responsibilities of the GM Aviation – Commercial and Strategy
- Accountability to the CEO for delivery of the relevant strategic projects for Aviation
- Accountability for the budget for the aviation and logistics projects
- Lead the creation and implementation of the strategic direction of the department in line with organisational strategy
- Provide strong and inspired leadership to a high-performing team, promoting and maintaining strong employee engagement and develop a culture aligned with organisational values and principles
- Support the development of the strategic direction and business plans of RFDS Aviation and Logistics department, in collaboration with the CEO and Board
- Lead the aviation and logistics project team to delivery, ensuring strict compliance and maintenance of the AOC and all other associated regulations and rules
- Lead the improvement of service quality, standardisation, and compliance with stringent air safety and transport operational requirements
- Contribute to the oversight of the project management of the development and implementation of the Bundaberg simulator
- Lead and drive commercial opportunities for the function, and through collaboration with key internal stakeholders

- Leading cross-function teams to achieve appropriate outcomes
- Managing budgets and keeping costs to a minimum in identifying and pursuing creative means of cost control
- Working in a productive and collaborative manner with aviation regulatory authorities. Having strong aviation-related relationships developed over many years
- Being an ambassador who has served in roles that have required them to represent their organisation at senior levels and with a variety of internal and external constituent groups
