About the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Queensland
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world. In Queensland, the RFDS employs close to 500 people with positions ranging from pilots, doctors, nurses, engineers, allied health professionals, and a variety of administration and support services roles. The RFDS operates 19 aircraft from nine operational bases located in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Charleville, Mount Isa, Longreach and Roma. The RFDS also delivers a broad range of essential healthcare services to rural and remote communities, as well as emergency retrieval services.
RFDS Cairns Base
In 1972, after a growing demand for care located further north, the RFDS moved its Charters Towers Base to Cairns. Half a century on, the Cairns base is now one of the largest RFDS operations across all of Australia. When the Cairns Base first opened, there was eight staff - including two doctors, a pilot, a Base Director, two radio officers and two administration staff - and a Beechcraft twin-engine Queenair A80 aircraft.
Today, our Cairns Base is home to four aircraft and more than 100 staff. Last financial year alone, RFDS Cairns Base teams transferred more than 1,100 patients, provided 18,698 primary health care consultations, including 2,648 mental health consultations, and flew more than 1.2 million kilometres.
For the RFDS Cairns Base, we are seeking an influential leader to manage our business and administration function. This role is known internally as a Base Support Manager (BSM) and is a permanent, full-time opportunity located near the Cairns Domestic Airport.
The Base Support Manager Role
The BSM is responsible for the efficient functioning of the Cairns facility through the coordination of administrative, financial, and operational activities and resources. The purpose of this role is to support the leadership of the base in ensuring the delivery of timely and efficient administration support, accurate and timely financial and non-financial information reporting, managing the administration team, and reporting to external and internal providers relevant to the RFDS business objectives. As a competent leader, you will:
- Lead the Administration team to ensure the delivery of quality administration support
- Role model to others what it means to be an organisational ambassador who reflects the values, promise and brand of the organisation
- Support the base leadership team in their delivery of patient outcomes
- Create a cohesive culture of connectedness and employee engagement aligned with RFDS values
- Deliver KPIs and targets in line with RFDS timeframes and strategic initiatives
- Contribute to supporting Base compliance i.e.- WH&S, disaster management and security.
- Manage the Base Facilities, RFDS accommodation and RFDS vehicles
The RFDS Base Administration team are dedicated and highly focused on supporting the operational staff and team objectives. The team is responsible for; data entry, incoming and outgoing mail, faxes and freight, stationery and uniform orders, coordinating fleet vehicles and accommodation, providing non-clinical administration support, reception duties, organising meetings and conducting minute-taking in addition they support the Primary Healthcare Team in clinical administration and rostering.

- Leadership experience with the ability to coach and mentor a team of administration and support staff
- Demonstrated experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Ability to work across and influence at all levels including Executive and Senior Management
- Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills
- Excellent organisational and time management skills of self and others with demonstrated ability to establish priorities and manage workloads
- Experience with adapting to emerging technologies that offer performance and efficiency improvements for teams and individuals
- High attention to detail
- Advanced systems experience
