Description
Future-focused, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) strives to harness innovation to improve patient care. Telehealth and Medical Chest are key areas of focus in support of this strategic priority. Telehealth is delivered at the RFDS by medical officers who provide a 24-hour medical consultation service for people living, working or travelling in remote areas of Queensland. Advice is also available to remote area nurses, allied health staff, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers, patients and carers.
A unique feature of the RFDS telehealth service is the Medical Chest. There are over 1,200 of these valuable medical chests located throughout the state. They allow patients to be treated for a range of medical conditions including antibiotics for infections, pain relief prior to medical evacuation and more. They also contain a variety of first aid items, including dressings and antiseptic.
We are looking for a Medical Chest Service Lead to help us grow and expand our unique service. This newly created role will lead service delivery, education, advocacy and operational performance of the Medical Chest Program in Queensland. To take the service forward and create commercial opportunities, this role involves identifying areas for medical chest service innovation and expansion.
Some key responsibilities of this role are-
- Leading the medical chest administration team
- Working alongside the Medical Lead for Telehealth in ensuring efficient and appropriate utilisation of medical chests
- Providing support and training to clinicians and medical chest holders
- Promoting and advocating medical chest use
- Clinical oversight of reordering and medication safety
- Maintenance and development of related policies and procedures
- Maintaining awareness of, and ensuring application and compliance with, relevant legislation and regulation as it applies to medical chest use including medication management, supply and prescription
This role will be a permanent position and can be worked in a full-time or part-time capacity. This role will be based in our Brisbane Corporate Office.
Who are we looking for?
You will describe yourself as a natural leader, a creative innovator, and a team player. In addition to an extensive clinical background as either a Pharmacist, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Medical Practitioner you will demonstrate;
- Well-developed management skills
- Commitment to continuous quality improvement and innovation
- Demonstrated commercial acumen skills and experience
- An ability to think operationally, with an analytic and creative approach to problem-solving
- Finance and Budgetary management experience
- Experience working in a clinical setting with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff
- Strong knowledge or ability to interpret State and Federal legislation

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world. The RFDS in Queensland provides excellence in, and access to primary health care, telehealth and aeromedical services across the state. Our emergency retrieval service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, delivering the finest care to more than 330,000 Australians each year — that’s one person every two minutes! In addition to aeromedical retrievals of the critically ill or injured, the RFDS also delivers a broad range of essential primary and preventative healthcare services, including telehealth, mental health, oral health and health promotion. The RFDS Corporate Office is located at the Brisbane International Airport, and RFDS operates from nine operational bases located in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Charleville, Mount Isa, Longreach and Roma.

RFDS (Queensland Section) works with vulnerable patients in remote parts of Queensland and provides an essential service to many regional and remote communities.
