About headspace:

headspace Cairns (under the direction of the RFDS (Queensland Section) Services Limited) is an innovative youth service, delivering primary and mental health, alcohol and drug services, social welfare and vocational services to young people aged 12-25 years. We’re looking for a passionate, dedicated and proactive person to join our team in this autonomous position.

The role:

• Maximum-term, full-time until June 2023
• Highly likely extension (subject to funding)
• Cairns based
• Travel required to Tablelands and Innisfail areas
• Flexibility required to attend community events after hours and weekends

The Community Engagement Officer seeks opportunities to reach out to young people and the communities that support them, to provide health education, raise mental health literacy and community awareness and link people to appropriate services. You will plan, develop, implement and evaluate a range of education and health promotion activities designed to raise mental health literacy and community awareness of challenges faced by young people, in order to increase early identification and help them to get early access to appropriate services.

As Community Engagement Officer you will work closely with our clinical team to understand the services that headspace provides, to advocate our services to both young people and the wider community. This role will also provide an administration function in Community Engagement and to the wider headspace team when required.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Diploma level qualification in youth work, mental health, health promotion, education or community engagement (desirable)
• Minimum of 12 months working with young people
• Experience in planning, development and delivery of high-quality education, training, and community awareness programs and activities
• Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based youth-focused intervention frameworks
• High level culturally appropriate interpersonal skills
• The ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relations
• Excellent organisational and time management skills
• Experience and knowledge of community engagement and awareness principles, including those relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and communities
• Demonstrated skills in website management, social media and publishing software
• Current Drivers Licence, and a willingness to travel as required

Desirable:

• Experience in writing grant applications and applying for external funding
• Experience with event planning and management
• Experience in preparation and execution of project plans and budgets

Please note: This role will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and will be subject to a criminal history check and have requirement to hold a ‘Working with Children Blue Card’.

RFDS (Queensland Section) and headspace works with vulnerable patients in remote parts of Queensland and provides an essential service to many regional and remote communities. To ensure the health and safety of our staff, our patients and these communities, as well as to manage the risks involved in service delivery and COVID-19 transmission in these communities and our workplaces, our staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
