Description
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS), has a rewarding opportunity for a Senior Mental Health Clinician to work in the Outback Mental Health team providing support to the community across remote Western QLD. The Drought and Wellbeing Service has a central focus of mental health education, psychological support and brief interventions.
This role is based in Longreach on a full-time maximum term contract until June 30th, 2022. RFDS supports clinicians with FIFO options with accommodation provided or RFDS support staff to relocate and live in Longreach.
Key responsibilities include:
- Undertake clinical assessments and implement follow up
- Provide counselling and support services to individuals, families and groups
- Plan and implement health promotion, early intervention and prevention activities
- Deliver psychosocial education i.e. workplace training and community driven events
- Interagency collaborations to improve the response to health crises in the community
- Participation in local projects and activities to promote wellness, community understanding and sources of referral and support
- Coordinating administration of current case load
Who we are looking for?
We are looking for creative Clinicians that possess the following;
- Registration with AHPRA or membership of the AASW
- Qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing
- Post-graduate experience in a relevant clinical field
- Demonstrated experience in brief interventions, therapeutic counselling and mental health education
- Understanding of issues impacting on Rural & Remote community members, particularly those relating to health and wellbeing
- Ability to work autonomously and be able to drive in and drive out of regions to deliver services

About us:
Since 2004 the RFDS Longreach Base has been providing mental health support to people in the town and surrounding communities. The service operates on a hub and spoke basis with the Longreach office being the primary base for clinicians offering services in surrounding communities. Since April 2015, the RFDS has been leading the Drought Wellbeing Service across Queensland. This program offers free counselling and support to people living and working in rural and remote areas impacted by drought.
The Drought Wellbeing Service offers a confidential and safe environment for individuals to express their concerns and, more importantly, to help provide solutions and strategies to overcome such problems. As well as providing clinical counselling services, our Drought Wellbeing Service clinicians facilitate presentations and workshops including Pit-Stop Health Checks and community events.

Successful candidates will be subject to a Police Check, may be required to undergo a medical assessment and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver's licence.
You will also be required to successfully complete the RFDS credentialing process which includes providing certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD).
Non AHPRA registered professionals will need to obtain a Blue Card prior to commencement.
RFDS (Queensland Section) works with vulnerable patients in remote parts of Queensland and provides an essential service to many regional and remote communities. To ensure the health and safety of our staff, our patients and these communities, as well as to manage the risks involved in service delivery and COVID-19 transmission in these communities and our workplaces, our staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are the successful candidate the requirement to be vaccinated against COVID-19, including maintaining any recommended booster requirements, will be a term of your employment, as will the requirement to provide proof of vaccination.
