Description
Are you passionate about supporting rural communities to recover and thrive following natural disasters?
Our Outback Mental Health team is seeking a Senior Mental Health Clinician to deliver meaningful disaster recovery support to individuals, families and communities across remote Queensland.
Disaster Recovery Program
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is committed to improving access to mental health support for people living in rural and remote communities. Through our Disaster Recovery Program, we provide practical psychological support, community education and wellbeing initiatives to communities impacted by natural disasters.
Working as part of a dedicated team, you will help strengthen community resilience through direct clinical support, education and outreach activities across one of Queensland's largest and most diverse geographic regions.
Our Role
This role provides a unique mix of clinical intervention, community engagement and education. Approximately one-third of your time will be spent delivering one-to-one mental health support, with the remainder focused on training, health promotion, stakeholder engagement and outreach activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering evidence-based mental health interventions through face-to-face and telehealth appointments.
- Maintaining a caseload supporting individuals affected by natural disaster.
- Planning and delivering community education sessions, training workshops and wellbeing initiatives such as Mental Health First Aid.
- Building relationships with councils, local services and community stakeholders.
- Supporting health promotion and recovery-focused programs across remote communities and attending field days.
- Working collaboratively with the broader Outback Mental Health team to improve regional mental health outcomes.
Extensive travel is a core component of the position, with regular outreach across Central West and South West Queensland communities.
This is a full-time maximum-term position until 30 June 2027, based in Longreach. This will be a fly-in and fly-out role from Brisbane.
Who Are We Looking For?
We are seeking a confident, adaptable and community-minded clinician who enjoys working autonomously while building strong local relationships.
To be successful, you will have:
- Qualifications in Psychology or Social Work (Mental Health Accredited/Accredited Mental Health Social Worker), Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing.
- Current registration with AHPRA or membership with the AASW.
- Significant post-graduate clinical experience.
- Experience delivering evidence-based mental health interventions.
- Strong facilitation, community engagement and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently across remote and rural settings.
