About the Role
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) is seeking experienced Nurses to join our state-wide Virtual Health Team.
On an initial 12-month contract, you will provide safe, evidence-based telephone triage and virtual nursing assessments for patients accessing the RFDS Queensland Acute Telehealth Service helping connect patients to the right care at the right time.
As a key member of our telehealth workforce, you will assess clinical risk, provide patient education and support, navigate consumers through appropriate care pathways, and escalate urgent or complex presentations in line with approved clinical protocols.
With an opportunity to be part of service establishment, this role plays a critical part in improving healthcare access and outcomes for people living in regional, rural and remote Queensland, ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate care wherever they are.
Plenty of flexibility with our roster!
In this role, you'll contribute to a 24/7 triage service, working a combination of day, night and weekend shifts, with the flexibility to work from home. Working a minimum of 0.5FTE, you’ll have flexibility to work your shifts over an 8 week roster cycle with plenty of time off in between!
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct structured telephone triage and virtual nursing assessments using approved clinical protocols and decision-support tools
- Assess patient presentations and determine urgency using the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS)
- Provide evidence-based nursing advice, education and safety-netting guidance
- Escalate urgent, high-risk or complex presentations to clinicians, retrieval services or emergency pathways
- Collaborate with Telehealth Medical Officers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated patient care
- Maintain accurate and compliant clinical documentation and records
- Contribute to quality improvement, clinical governance and service evaluation activities.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent qualification approved for registration in Australia), along with training and experience in Australasian Triage Scale (ATS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) qualifications
- Demonstrated post-registration experience in emergency nursing, acute care, primary healthcare, rural and remote nursing, telephone triage, virtual care, or a related clinical setting
- Strong clinical assessment, communication and decision-making skills, with the ability to provide safe patient care in a virtual environment.
