When baby Indi was born mid-flight, your support saved her life. Thanks to you, Flight Nurse and midwife Kerry Lyn Ukena had the specialist care and equipment she needed to help tiny Indi.
Today Indi is healthy, strong and meeting every important childhood milestone.
Joelene and Jake were shocked when they learned Joelene, just 31 weeks pregnant, was in labour. She needed emergency specialist care only available in Sydney. Fortunately, our aeromedical team were there to take her and Jake, with Flight Nurse Kerry on board.
With just ten minutes until landing, Kerry delivered Indi – but she wasn’t breathing. Thanks to Kerry’s actions, within a few minutes, Indi’s tiny chest began rising on its own, and she took her first breaths before landing in Sydney and receiving specialist care.
Jake says these days, it’s hard to imagine her little life hung in the balance 800 metres above Sydney airport. Indi is the cherished baby of the family, with three older brothers who adore her. Life is all about keeping up with her brothers and there is so much love.
Indi’s early arrival caused some concerns of developmental delay. But after 12 months of therapy appointments with a paediatric neurologist, she was given the ‘all clear’, a huge relief for Joelene and Jake. She now attends daycare, and happily explores the family’s rural property with her brothers.
“She's just a happy, bubbly little girl. You wouldn't pick that anything like that happened to her. And she's a little bit of our family that we didn't know we needed. The love for her is beautiful,” said Jake.
Your support saved Indi’s life – and Jake and Joelene are so grateful to you.
