"I’ve smoked for quite a long time, and I’ve had many attempts to give up and never lasted the long haul."
For St Helens resident, Suzie, giving up smoking was a challenge that stretched over years. She was stuck in a cycle of stopping and starting that never went anywhere for long. But something changed when she connected with RFDS Tasmania. With guidance, compassion, and the right support, Suzie discovered that this time could be different.
Through the RFDS Smoking Cessation Program, Suzie began working with nurse Chris in virtual sessions that made space for honesty and real change. Simple strategies—like replacing her morning coffee or evening wine with juice or water—helped her unlearn long-standing habits. And with each one, she was changing her life.
"My sister smokes and I had to go up to Launceston with her yesterday and when we parked the car, she said, ‘I'm going to have a quick cigarette,’ and I felt like it didn't bother me."
Physical changes came quickly, too. No more pockets full of tissues, no more persistent cough. “My breathing is much better already and I’m not coughing…I feel 100% better.” she said.

When one drop creates a ripple
Though Suzie set out on the journey alone, it didn’t stay that way for long.
“When I first had the Zoom with Chris, he (Jeff, Suzie’s partner) wasn’t sort of interested but he was there, and then he ended up sitting down in the background and joining in when he saw how good it was.”
Together, they built new routines and supported each other through each challenge. “I don’t think I would’ve done as well as if [Jeff] hadn’t given up at the same time,” Suzie said. “Chris told us that it’s better if we can do it together. And we both are so happy about it. This time I’m going to do it completely.”
The impact didn’t stop there. Her sister has cut back. Her son has started his own quit journey. A ripple effect of change, inspired by one brave step forward.
A lifeline of support
The support didn’t end after the sessions. “Chris has followed us up to see how we’re going and has told me I could reach out to her any time we wanted to. So that’s fantastic too. I think the community would be lost without the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”
Suzie’s goal is clear: to never smoke again. And this time, she knows she’s not going back.
