Imagine living in a community so remote that access to a wide range of shopping is a rare opportunity.

For those on Flinders Island, a trip to “the big smoke” can consume a significant portion of the shopping budget. Travel and freight costs make even essential items a luxury.

Now imagine facing a transformative life stage like menopause—experiencing hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, disrupted sleep, and the added frustration of bladder control concerns—all without the easy access to health advice, resources, and support that others take for granted.

Questions like “Is what I’m experiencing normal?” and “How do I manage these changes?” become daily worries.

That’s where the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Tasmania stepped in.

On March 29th, Flinders Island hosted its very own Menopause Masterclass, inspired by local community surveys and feedback and supported by the Tasmanian government.

This event wasn’t just about sharing medical advice—it was a day of connection, empowerment, and care designed for women in remote Tasmania.

Through insightful presentations and interactive sessions, attendees learned valuable information from

  • Lisa Banfield (Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist)
  • Dr Lynne Davies (local GP)
  • and Margie Law (Women’s Health Tasmania).

Their expert guidance addressed both the physical and emotional challenges of menopause, offering practical solutions that could truly make a difference.

Stalls by Independence Australia, Looking Great Beauty Salon and Scottsdale Shoe Shop complemented the information sessions and offered attendees the opportunity to explore local services and products without leaving the island.

Anita Wilson, RFDS Physical Health Worker on Flinders Island, played a key role in ensuring the success of this initiative, reinforcing RFDS Tasmania’s dedication to supporting rural and remote communities.

Her commitment to improving health outcomes in isolated areas highlights the extraordinary care provided by RFDS staff.

Women left the event feeling supported and understood, and their feedback spoke volumes:

  • “Worth the drive into town!”
  • “Dr Lynne’s info was excellent.”
  • “Great mix of theory, practice, fun, and shopping!”

At RFDS Tasmania, we’re committed to improving health outcomes for rural and remote communities. Events like this Menopause Masterclass are just one way we strive to empower individuals and address the unique challenges faced by remote Tasmanians.

You can help us continue delivering vital healthcare to Tasmanians in rural and remote areas.
