About Us
When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.

About the Role

Based on site at our Essendon Hangar, the Operations Centre Coordinator supports both aeromedical and road Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) operations, ensuring effective dispatch, communication, and smooth day-to-day shift coordination. This role plays a key part in overseeing crew welfare and fatigue management while maintaining safe, efficient service delivery across all operations. You will represent RFDS by building strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality patient and customer outcomes.
All shifts are performed on site (no hybrid) primarily based at our Essendon Hangar supporting aeromedical shifts alongside road NEPT shifts.  Occasional travel to other RFDS locations may be required to support operational needs.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Coordinating and dispatching NEPT crews across both road and aeromedical transport services
  • Monitoring shift operations to ensure safe, efficient, and seamless day-to-day service delivery
  • Supporting crew welfare and fatigue management in line with RFDS policies and standards
  • Maintaining clear and effective communication with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Ensuring compliance with RFDS procedures, NEPT regulations, and relevant clinical protocols
  • Providing accurate administrative support, including data entry, reporting, and invoicing
  • Collaborating with rostering and leadership teams to optimise workforce planning and shift coverage
  • Promoting RFDS services to clients and partners, contributing to business development initiatives
  • Participating in continuous improvement activities to enhance patient care and service outcomes
  • Representing RFDS professionally, building strong relationships with health professionals and the wider community
  • Undertaking occasional travel to other RFDS locations as required by operational needs

To be successful, you will need:

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver to deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional and stakeholder-focused approach
  • High attention to detail, ensuring accuracy across data entry, reporting, and documentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and confidence in learning new systems and troubleshooting issues
  • Experience coordinating teams and stakeholders in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Understanding of NEPT operations, medical terminology, or healthcare environments (desirable)
  • Exposure to aeromedical or dispatch operations (highly regarded)
  • Flexibility to work a 24/7 rotating roster and ability to obtain and maintain an ASIC (Aviation Security Identification Card)
  • Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.

What working at RFDS can offer you:

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Access to salary packaging options to reduce your taxable income
  • Fitness passport – a discounted gym membership to gyms and pools that both you and your family can enjoy
  • Access to discounted private health insurance
  • Great parental leave benefits in addition to government parental leave.
