About this Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Manager of Primary Health Care, you will be responsible for providing high quality, best practice Maternal and Child Health services to women and their families who live in the remote and isolated areas of the far North and West of South Australia.

Working as part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Primary Health Care team, you will play a key role in delivering accessible, culturally safe, and family-centred care.

The role involves collaborating closely with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, hospitals, and community services to ensure coordinated and continuous care. Regular travel to remote communities is an essential part of the position.

We believe our people – all of our people – keep the Royal Flying Doctor Service flying.

Specifically, you will:

  • deliver evidence-based midwifery care, including antenatal and postnatal assessments, newborn examinations, immunisations, administration of medications and injections, collection of pathology specimens, cervical screening (Pap smears), breast health assessments, and other clinical procedures within scope of practice.
  • facilitate timely access to specialist, allied health, and community support services, ensuring women receive comprehensive and coordinated care.
  • work in partnership with RFDS doctors to provide emergency nursing and midwifery care to critically ill or injured patients requiring aeromedical retrieval and transport from      remote and rural locations.

About You

You are:

  • experienced in understanding Primary Health Care principles, with a strong commitment to community-based nursing and midwifery practice, including health promotion, disease prevention, patient education, and self-management support.
  • person-centred clinician who thrives when working collaboratively with individuals, families, and communities to improve health outcomes.
  • a strong communicator who can work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • knowledgeable with regards to current immunisation schedules, infection control, CPR and emergency resuscitation techniques, equipment and medications.
  • experienced in understanding cross cultural and rural/remote area nursing issues.

To be considered for the role you require:

  • AHPRA registration as a Nurse and Midwife, and a minimum of 5 years’ experience, preferably within a primary health care, community, rural or remote healthcare setting

Your application will be enhanced by the successful completion of an approved immunisation training program and Advance Life Support Certificate, or your willingness to obtain these.
