About Us
When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.
About the Role
The Payroll Officer plays a key role in delivering accurate, timely and compliant payroll services across RFDS. Acting as the primary point of contact for payroll‑related enquiries, you will manage confidential employee records, ensure payroll processing meets legislative and award requirements, and support reporting obligations with a high level of accuracy and care.
This role is well suited to someone with existing payroll experience who is looking to further develop their skills within a supportive, values‑driven organisation. You will contribute to a reliable and continuously improving payroll function that supports employee satisfaction and upholds the integrity of RFDS systems and processes, while gaining exposure to broader payroll operations and opportunities for professional growth.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Act as the first point of contact for payroll enquiries, monitoring the Payroll Ticketing System, responding to requests, and escalating complex matters as required.
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date and confidential payroll records, including changes to employee details such as pay rates, allowances, deductions and role changes.
- Process payroll accurately and on schedule in compliance with relevant Awards, Agreements, legislation and internal policies.
- Prepare and lodge statutory payroll obligations, including PAYG withholding, superannuation contributions, payroll journals, and end‑of‑year reporting.
- Support payroll compliance and continuous improvement by monitoring legislative changes, maintaining payroll documentation, and archiving records in line with regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance, training and support to staff on payroll systems and processes to promote consistent, compliant and efficient payroll practices.
To be successful, you will need:
- The ability to work independently with a positive, self‑motivated approach, taking initiative to learn new tasks and manage your workload effectively.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple payroll tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
- Clear and professional communication skills, with the confidence to explain payroll information verbally and in writing to employees and colleagues.
- Good problem‑solving and analytical skills, with a willingness to ask questions, think critically, and seek solutions when issues arise.
- Relevant qualifications or training in payroll, accounting or finance, or practical payroll experience, with an understanding of awards, agreements and employment conditions.
- Experience or exposure to payroll processes, calculations and systems, with a willingness to learn and provide support or guidance to others (experience with Time & Attendance systems such as Emplive is desirable but not essential).
- Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.
What working at RFDS can offer you:
- Five non-accruable Office Closure Leave days each year
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Access to salary packaging options to reduce your taxable income
- Fitness passport – a discounted gym membership to gyms and pools that both you and your family can enjoy
- Access to discounted private health insurance
