About the RFDS (Queensland Section)
For nearly 100 years, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) has delivered life‑saving aeromedical and primary healthcare services to rural, remote and regional communities. Every day, our dedicated team works to provide the finest care to the furthest corner.
RFDS bases across Queensland deliver emergency aeromedical retrievals and inter‑facility transfers, helping patients access the care they need when it’s not available locally. Every flight is staffed by a pilot, a flight nurse and when required, a medical officer. Our fully pressurised aircraft operate like mini-intensive care units, running 24/7 to provide the finest care to more than 330,000 Australians each year that’s one person every two minutes!
Our Role
The RFDS (Queensland Section) is currently seeking a Flight Nurse (Midwifery) to join our team in Cairns.
Whether responding to an emergency retrieval or supporting an inter‑facility transfer, every shift offers the chance to make a real difference in the lives of Queenslanders. Our teams care for patients across a wide range of clinical needs including acute medical and trauma cases, obstetrics, paediatrics, neonates and more. As a Flight Nurse (Midwifery) with the RFDS in Queensland, you will deliver life‑saving care in an environment like no other, using your expertise where it is needed most. Your responsibilities will include:
- Deliver aeromedical clinical services including:
- High quality nursing care to patients on transfers and retrievals
- Assisting in the coordination of the transfer of patients
- Liaising with hospital-based retrieval teams
- Coordinate, conduct and participate in clinical governance activities such as clinical case reviews, internal/external audits etc.
- Contribute to the development of a culture of quality and safety in clinical nursing service provision
- Ensure compliance with National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards
- Contribute to the review and updating of policies and procedures as required
- Ensure that all documentation is accurate and completed in a timely and professional manner
This position is offered as permanent- full time. You will work 14 shifts per month which will be a mixture of day and night shifts Monday to Sunday.
Essential Skills
You will be an experienced Nurse and Midwife who can work both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team. Along with resilience, compassion and strong problem‑solving skills, you will have:
- AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- AHPRA registration as a Registered Midwife
- 3-5 years post graduate experience which must include a minimum three years (full-time equivalent) experience in a critical care environment in either a:
- Recognised Major Regional or Tertiary Hospital Emergency Department with 24 hour in-Department medical coverage
- Recognised Intensive Care Unit OR
- Cumulative of three years critical care experience across both environment
- Previous experience providing healthcare in a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Ability to work independently and handle competing priorities
- Ability to spend considerable time working and/or travelling in the confined spaces of a small aircraft
- Current Advanced Life Support (ALS)
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal advanced resuscitation certification

Before commencement, successful candidates must undergo a drug and alcohol test and possibly a medical assessment. You must possess a valid, unrestricted Driver's Licence and be able to obtain an ASIC Card. Additionally, candidates must complete the RFDS and Queensland Health credentialing process successfully.
