About the Memory Lane Service

Memory Lane is a service of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Victoria. We provide individuals in end-of-life care the opportunity to visit a place of personal significance. Since 2021 Memory Lane have taken peopleto their favourite beach, a beloved park, to watch their favourite football team, to revist a favourite bakery, toattend a family wedding, and often, simply to go home one last time.

  • The Memory Lane service is staff ed by volunteers and all journeys are subject to the availability ofvolunteers and vehicles.
  • Memory Lane transports clients in non-life-threatening circumstances, who are deemed by their doctor tobe stable enough for the planned journey. If a client’s condition deteriorates during the journey, ourvolunteers provide comfort care measures, which include positioning, temperature control, oxygen andsuction.
  • A family member, friend or carer is expected to accompany a Memory Lane client. Up to three people canride with the client.
  • Client medication is administered by the clients, their carers or family members or an accompanyingqualifi ed health practitioner.

Memory Lane clients must meet the following eligibility criteria

  • Be aged 18 years or older
  • Have a terminal diagnosis and are currently receiving palliative or end-of-life care (as confi rmed by their GPor treatment specialist).
  • Require specialised medical transport to revisit their place of personal signifi cance.
  • Clients must have the approval of their treating clinician prior to undertaking the journey. This can be a GPor specialist.
  • If clients have complex health care needs beyond the abilities of our volunteers, we ask that a qualifi edhealth practitioner accompany them on the journey (please don’t worry if you are unsure, we will discussthis with you).

Memory Lane Service Goals of Care

  • The Memory Lane service is volunteer run and all journeys are subject to the availability of volunteers andsuitable vehicles.
  • RFDS Victoria is only able to transport clients in non-life-threatening circumstances to places of personal significance. If a client’s condition deteriorates during the journey, volunteers can provide basic life support only, and will request an ambulance by calling triple zero.
  • A family member and/or carer is expected to accompany a client.
  • Only clients, their carers or family members or an accompanying qualified health practitioner can administer client medication.
