The RFDS in VIC

Flying Doctor Care Pod Pilot

Free, 24/7 video consultations with an emergency clinician - now in Swifts Creek, East Gippsland.

The Flying Doctor Care Pod is a secure, walk-in space where you can have a free video consultation with a doctor or nurse from the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED). No appointment is needed. The first Care Pod is now open at the Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centre in East Gippsland, serving local residents and the many visitors travelling the Great Alpine Road and surrounding Alpine region.

More than a quarter of Australians live in rural or remote regions, where they face lower life expectancy, higher injury and mortality rates, and reduced access to essential healthcare. For nearly a century, the Royal Flying Doctor Service has innovated to close that gap - from radio and aviation in the 1920s to telehealth long before COVID-19 made it mainstream. The Flying Doctor Care Pod is the next step: bringing urgent and non-urgent medical consultations directly into the rural communities - and the tourist routes - that need them most.

Do you need to see a doctor NOW? You can use the pod. If you think you are having a heart attack, stroke, severe breathing issues, lost a limb, or other life-threatening event, call 000 immediately.

Why the Flying Doctor is piloting Care Pods

Rural Victorians often face long drives to reach a hospital or GP, and small communities are increasingly affected by healthcare worker shortages. The Flying Doctor Care Pod is designed to bridge that gap with a scalable, cost-effective solution that doesn't replace local care - it adds another way to access it.

Each Care Pod is a private, climate-controlled, wheelchair-accessible booth equipped with diagnostic tools that measure vital signs (including heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen levels and breathing rate), so a clinician can assess you remotely. Inside the pod you're connected via secure video link to a doctor or nurse from the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) - the same service used across Victoria for virtual emergency care.

The pod is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no appointment required, and using the Care Pod is completely free.

The Swifts Creek pilot

Our first Flying Doctor Care Pod is in operation at the Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centre in East Gippsland - a town of fewer than 300 residents that sees a much larger annual influx of visitors travelling the Great Alpine Road and Alpine National Park.

The Swifts Creek pilot is operating in a rural community that experiences significant seasonal visitor numbers and where access to healthcare can involve substantial travel. While local services, including Omeo District Health's 24/7 Urgent Care Centre and Bairnsdale Regional Health Service Emergency Department, remain available, the Care Pod provides an additional free, around-the-clock pathway to connect with a qualified clinician close to home.

What the Care Pod can help with

You can talk to a VVED clinician about a range of concerns, including:

  • Minor injuries and illnesses
  • Advice on whether you need to attend a hospital or clinic in person
  • Referrals to other healthcare providers for physical examination or tests

The Care Pod is not intended for serious medical or life-threatening emergencies. If you are experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, severe chest pain or weakness down one side of the body, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

The Care Pod cannot be used for after-hours prescription refills or medical certificates. For these, contact Gippsland Primary Health Network on 1800 272 767.

Our partners

The Flying Doctor Care Pod pilot is delivered through a partnership between the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria, CareZen, the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED), Omeo District Health and the Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centre. Together, we're testing how shared infrastructure and virtual emergency care can extend equitable healthcare to rural and remote Victoria.

Depending on the findings of the pilot, this duration may be shortened or extended, and the program may be expanded to additional Victorian communities.

How do I enter the pod?

To enter, you should scan the QR code located on the door. After doing so, you will receive a text message with the PIN code to unlock the door. What happens when I enter the pod?

You will be guided through a simple on-screen process to connect with a VVED clinician. The screen will also explain what to do in an emergency. Medical devices have been provided in the pod to assist you. Your VVED clinician will guide you in their use.

Not at all. The system is designed to be simple. You will be shown what to do on the screen step-by-step.

Is the pod cleaned regularly?

Yes, the pod is cleaned weekly. It is checked daily to ensure cleanliness as well. There is hand sanitiser available inside the pod for you to use before and after you use the equipment.
