Thanks to you, the best engineers keep the Flying Doctor in the air every day and every patient gets the care they need – whether it’s an emergency retrieval or a clinic visit in a remote community.

You may be interested to hear about the behind the scenes work that keeps our aircraft running.

Highly skilled Line Engineer, Jonathan Edwards, is behind the success of every flight, just as you are. Jonathan oversees the maintenance of all 14 aircraft that bring live-saving care to thousands of Australians in the bush.

Your compassionate support means accuracy and excellence for every flight. While there is no ‘typical’ day, important safety tasks happen daily. A thorough inspection is carried out on flight-ready, on-call and clinic aircraft before each aircraft is prepared for the day. The Engineering team then move into the hangar to work on scheduled maintenance.

Did you know that every day they are looking at a different part of the aircraft? From the fuselage to the wings, the team will inspect these aircraft structures, sometimes pulling them apart and replacing systems that are worn or due for scheduled replacement.

Aircraft must be ready to mobilise at any moment, and safety is paramount, so Jonathan and the Engineering team run 24/7 engineering support. “We take turns with our on-call roster and carry a phone with us, so even if it’s 2am and a pilot has an issue, we can come out straight away and fix the aircraft,” says Jonathan.

This is why your dedication to caring for outback communities is so important. Your kindness means you are there for every moment of an emergency retrieval journey or fly-in/fly-out clinic, ensuring safe travel for the team and swift delivery of patients to hospital.

Your support is critical to the safety of our patients, and your kindness helps the Engineering team keep our aircraft running smoothly every day. Thank you.
