Your compassion matters so much to mothers and babies in the bush, because it is only with your support that every Flight Nurse, like Karen Barlow, can continue receiving world-class training for birthing emergencies.
You’re making sure babies have the very best start in life.
Over the many years Karen has been a Flight Nurse and qualified midwife, she has seen all kinds of ‘arrivals’ for expectant mums and says Flight Nurses must be “ready for anything”. No two days are the same.
“When we meet the patient, we assess whether to stay at the referring hospital and deliver, then transfer mum and bub, or try to get them to the delivery ward at the receiving hospital, which is the preferred option,” said Karen.
“Sometimes, baby decides it doesn’t want to wait and arrives on the aircraft. Flight Nurses are equipped for that, too.”
Your support ensures our Flight Nurses can continue to have all the skills needed to not only deliver babies, but to care for mums and newborns during any unexpected scenarios.
Whether a birth happens on the ground, in a remote-based hospital or in flight, Flight Nurses like Karen are equipped to give comfort and peace of mind.
One of Karen’s most memorable days on the job was safely delivering a baby on an emergency flight just before take-off, then watching mum, dad and baby spend their time in the air travelling to the Hospital while getting to know one another.
“Playing a role in the birth of a new baby is something really special, and it will always stay with you.”
Because of caring people like you, mums in the bush can feel confident and happy as they welcome their little ones into the world. You don’t let anything get in the way of families receiving urgent medical care - thank you.
