Wellbeing and Mental Health

To Justine's clients, sometimes the biggest challenge is the isolation itself.

Our services in SA/NT

We offer an accessible and responsive Wellbeing & Mental Health Care Service to people in rural and remote South Australia and Central Australia.

Services are delivered by a combination of telephone/video consultations and face-to-face appointments at regular fly-in and drive-in health clinics.

Living in remote areas presents many challenges and can test resilience on many levels.

Our team provides culturally-appropriate emotional and wellbeing support to rural and remote people via a Stepped Model of Care, which means we match your needs to the services provided.

This can be short or long-term support for times of mild distress, or more in-depth support and care coordination for conditions such as anxiety, depression or more complex illnesses.

Culturally appropriate support

To Sally, a long hospital stay in Port Augusta is made easier through the support of the RFDS Aboriginal Health Coordinator.

More than 100 patients are supported by this role every year.

Despite COVID-19 'worries', more than 85% of these patients remained in Port Augusta Hospital for the completion of their treatment, which improves wellbeing and reduces the likelihood of re-admission.

Join the team

As a Mental Health Clinician, Niamh Gallagher is a member of a growing RFDS team.

Originally from Ireland, Niamh moved to Australia six years ago and began working with the Flying Doctor in 2019.

“I’d read about the RFDS online and thought it sounded like a brilliant way to travel around Australia while doing what I loved,” Niamh said.

“So many people go on about their purpose in life and I feel mental health is obviously mine. I believe you can do so much for people through simple gestures and kind words.”
