The Regional Operations Centre (ROC) at the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Western Australia (RFDS WA) is located at Jandakot Airport—one of the Southern Hemisphere's busiest airports.
The ROC is a pivotal hub for coordinating emergency medical retrievals across the expansive and remote regions of Western Australia.
The crew in the ROC make crucial decisions every day to ensure the smooth retrieval of patients. Coordinating nearly 30 patient transfers daily across the state requires quick thinking and expertise. Last year alone, the ROC fielded over 27,000 calls, facilitating aeromedical transfers for those in urgent need of medical care.
No two days at the ROC are alike, and various factors influence decision-making for patient retrievals. From the urgency of emergencies to airstrip conditions, weather and support services on the ground, the team is confident with navigating complex challenges.
The responsibility of planning and executing safe retrievals extends across diverse scenarios, from a worker in the Goldfields with chest pain to a tourist in a Kimberley gorge or a child who has fallen off their bike in the Great Southern. This duty intensifies during the festive season, known to be the busiest time of the year for the RFDS WA.
