RFDS Robin Miller Nursing Scholarship
Overview
The RFDS Robin Miller Nursing Scholarship has been established by the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania in partnership with the School of Nursing at the University of Tasmania and RFDS Central Operations, covering South Australia and much of the Northern Territory. The scholarship provides a senior nursing undergraduate with experience of living in remote Australia and working there with the RFDS. It will give insight into the advantages and difficulties of nursing practice in the Outback in general and among indigenous Australians in particular.
The scholarship is dedicated to the memory of the late Mrs Robin Miller-Dicks (1940–1975), the nurse, aviatrix and RFDS pilot who became widely known by Aboriginal Australians as the ‘Sugar-Bird Lady’ because of handing out many thousands of doses of sweetly flavoured polio oral vaccine.
