Fly-in vaccines help fight flu and fever

Getting vaccines to remote and isolated workers is no small task, but it is vital for protecting their health and preventing outbreaks that could disrupt essential industries.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service SA/NT (RFDS) recently partnered with major beef producer Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) to deliver a fly-in vaccination clinic to workers at AACo’s Brunette Downs Station.

Located in the Barkly, deep in the Territory’s cattle country, the remote station lies more than 350km from the nearest services in Tennant Creek, making access to health care a major challenge.

RFDS fly-in vaccination clinics are a lifeline for remote communities, providing essential vaccinations like influenza, COVID-19 and Q Fever for 10 to 100 people at a time.

"Living in a remote and isolated area, means illness can quickly turn serious. With medical help often hours away, even mild cases of viruses and infections can become a big worry." RFDS Primary Health Care Manager Mandy Smallacombe said.

“Our fly-in model allows us to challenge traditional healthcare delivery, ensuring that preventative care reaches the most remote areas where it's needed most.

“Our mission is to provide the finest care to the furthest corner – and our vaccination clinics are doing exactly that.”

In the last 12 months, the RFDS has delivered more than 850 vaccinations across SA/NT, continuing its vital role in safeguarding the health of those living and working in Australia’s most remote areas.
