The Outback Heritage Experience (OHE) at the Royal Flying Doctor Service (South Eastern Section) (RFDSSE) Broken Hill base has been ranked the number one tourism attraction in the city by users of TripAdvisor.
Voted a Travellers’ Choice destination for 2021 by TripAdvisor, the RFDSSE Broken Hill Outback Heritage Experience continues to rate highly with the thousands who visit every year.
With the unique setting of a working RFDSSE Base, the Broken Hill centre gives the opportunity to take a walk through more than 90 years of Flying Doctor history while seeing our vintage aviation fleet in the hangar.
RFDSSE Business Manager – Tourism Sue Williams said the OHE had grown to be an all-encompassing look at how John Flynn’s dream to give people in rural and remote Australia access to high-quality healthcare became a reality.
“The Outback Heritage Experience is a great way to learn about the rich history of one of Australia’s most iconic institutions,” Ms Williams said.
“With the Mantle of Safety Museum, a 44-seat theatre showing a unique Flying Doctor film and a walk through the historic Bellman Hangar, there is so much to see and do. We’re very proud of our facility and it’s very exciting that people who review us on TripAdvisor feel the same way.”
Visitors can also track the RFDSSE aircraft fleet in real-time, view vintage aircraft and take a piece of the Flying Doctor home by shopping at the great gift shop, further benefiting outback communities in the process.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service is the chosen charity partner for the Mundi Mundi Bash on April 21-23, with a number of activities raising funds for the Flying Doctor including the Nutbush World Record attempt and Mundi Undie Run. A visit to the Outback Heritage Experience is a natural step for those who are spending a few extra days in Broken Hill.
“For those who might be visiting the region for the first time to attend the Mundi Mundi Bash, they have the opportunity to come and learn about our great work and see where their generous support is going,” Ms Williams said.
The OHE is open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm on weekends and most public holidays. The OHE is closed on Good Friday and Anzac Day. Tours of the base take place at half-hour intervals throughout each day.
The RFDSSE also runs a Visitor Experience Centre at its Dubbo base, which features an interactive health station, augmented reality experience in the cabin of an aeromedical aircraft and a replica of the Australia’s first air ambulance De Havilland DH-83 Fox Moth.
