For students from Tiwi College, this year’s NT City2Surf was more than a fun run.
With support from the Flying Doctor, the students were flown from the Pickertaramoor community, to Darwin to take part in the NT’s largest mass sporting event.
Over the years, the partnership has seen dozens of Tiwi College students make the journey – many competing in a major organised sporting event for the first time.
The students also visited the RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility, where they stepped inside aircraft displays, explored the planes from a pilot’s perspective, and participated in virtual activities that brought the history of the Flying Doctor to life.
RFDS Tourism Manager Bek Garrett said this partnership was much bigger than race day.
“The students train throughout the year, support one another and work towards a shared goal,” Bek said.
It’s about giving young people the opportunity to build confidence and experience the pride that comes from achieving something they’ve worked hard for.

"It was a great experience running with other people from different countries and walks of life. It was a good running session for our health," Tiwi College student Dakoda said.
Pearl Hippolite said the event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to challenge themselves, promote healthy lifestyles, and connect with people from many different backgrounds.
“Students returned home feeling proud of their achievements, inspired by the stories they heard, and motivated to continue living healthy and active lifestyles,” she said.
For many of the students, one of the most memorable moments was listening to the story of Matthias Ampiyartilawayi Ulungura at the RFDS Tourist Facility – a proud Tiwi hero whose contribution to the defence of Darwin during WWII remains an important part of Australian history.
“While many of our students have heard this story before through family and community connections, it was powerful and inspiring to hear his story shared from another perspective,” Pearl said.
“Seeing a Tiwi man recognised and honoured in such a significant setting filled students and staff with a great sense of pride.
“We sincerely thank our sponsors and supporters for making this rewarding and unforgettable experience possible.
