With a population of just 201 people, Woomelang has a pub, general store and Bush Nursing Centre, but like many other small towns throughout the Mallee region, Woomelang has no medical specialists. Helping to address this gap in health care, RFDS Victoria’s Flying Doctor Telehealth service connects patients living with diabetes in rural Victorian communities with endocrinologists in Melbourne.
Many Woomelang residents benefit from the service, with 68-year-old Susan Sanford-Cronin recently experiencing a positive outcome that enabled her to travel overseas to visit her family for the first time in four years.
Susan previously managed type 2 diabetes with dietary changes, but a new course of medication prescribed to treat another condition created a new set of problems for the active retiree.
“Late last year I developed polymyalgia rheumatica (a painful inflammatory disorder) which nearly crippled me. I had to go on steroids to live without pain. But the steroids increased my blood sugar levels, so I had to have four insulin shots a day to control it,” explains Susan.
Accessing weekly Telehealth appointments with an endocrinologist via the local Bush Nursing Centre, Susan was soon able to manage her condition, take control of her health and travel overseas to be reunited with her family.
“If it wasn’t for the Telehealth service, I couldn’t have travelled overseas to visit my two daughters. I met with the endocrinologist every week via the Telehealth service, and together we got my blood sugar levels down enough to the point where I could safely fly,” says Susan.
Travelling to the USA in June, Susan was overseas for six weeks where she spent quality time with her children and grandchildren in Michigan and Texas. She also delighted in visiting Niagara Falls in Canada.
Susan expresses great gratitude for the bulk-billed service that enabled her to reconnect with her family and enjoy the trip of a lifetime.
“I’m in awe of this service. I can’t say enough good things about it. Without this service I would have probably had to travel to Bendigo and back to see a specialist, which would be a 6 hour round-trip for me,” says Susan. “It’s such a valuable service. They look after me fantastically. I hadn’t seen my children and grandchildren for four years, and I couldn’t have done it without the Flying Doctor Telehealth service,” says Susan.
