The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) is committed to providing excellence in and access to Primary Health Care (PHC) and Aeromedical services across Queensland.

PHC is one of our most vital services, accounting for up to two-thirds of our daily operations, as prevention is essential to improved health outcomes for those living in the furthest corner.

Our Role

We are looking for a Nurse Manager in Primary Health Care who is passionate about leading and providing PHC services to people in regional, rural, and remote areas of Queensland. As a Nurse Manager, you will have the opportunity to inspire and empower a dedicated team to deliver best practices in promoting good health, providing proactive care, and maintaining overall well-being.
  
The Nurse Manager PHC is crucial in delivering quality healthcare services and improving health outcomes. You will be responsible for leading with a focus on education, representation, and operational efficiency. Your dedication will ensure that primary healthcare nursing services meet the highest standards of care and performance. In addition, your role will include;  

  • Coaching, leading and supporting PHC nurses in your team
  • Leading workforce planning and recruitment of PHC nurses
  • Working closely with the State Manager and collaboratively with interdisciplinary base leads
  • Ensuring that clinical equipment, maintenance, and consumables are adequate to support PHC activities at a base level
  • Manage local PHC nursing resources and rosters within the approved budget
  • Participate in operational shifts for 50% of your roster
  • With a focus on growth, you will collaborate to expand and enhance PHC nursing services, contributing to the strategic direction and strategy development within the PHC stream
  
This permanent, full-time position will be based at the RFDS Cairns Base. You will be responsible for leading essential primary healthcare services to communities in the Far North and Northwest regions. This includes delivering clinical services as part of our group practice on a rotational basis from our Mt Isa base.  

As part of your support for rural and remote communities, your broad scope of practice may include:
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services
  • Child and family health services
  • Women’s health services
  • Chronic disease care and support
  • Health Promotion and Health Education Activities
  • Early detection and brief intervention programs
  
Essential Skills

As a respected leader within the PHC Team, your well-established management skills, exceptional leadership, and decision-making abilities will make a valuable contribution. Your demonstrated capability to initiate and execute change and dedication to continuous quality improvement will see the team continue to achieve exceptional patient-centred care. Your strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking will play a key role in supporting your team and contributing to the overall PHC vision.
  
In addition, you will be an experienced Registered Nurse and Midwife who can work autonomously and in a multidisciplinary team. In addition to your resilience and compassion, you will have:
  • AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
  • AHPRA registration as a Registered Midwife
  • Extensive experience in Rural and Remote Nursing and the provision of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Immunisation endorsement (desirable)
  • Rural and Isolated Practice (Scheduled Medicines) endorsement (RIPRN) (desirable)
  • A Respectful understanding of cultural diversity including traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views of health
  • Capacity to stay overnight in communities (2-3 nights)
  
Essential Skills (Can be obtained after starting employment) 
  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS)
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal advanced resuscitation certification

Before commencement, successful candidates must undergo a drug and alcohol test and may be required to undergo a medical assessment. You must possess a valid, unrestricted Driver's Licence and be able to obtain an ASIC Card. Additionally, candidates must complete the RFDS and Queensland Health credentialing process successfully.
