Multi-Disciplinary Mental Health Professional (Broken Hill) 

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia South Eastern Section provides comprehensive primary and emergency health services to rural and remote communities in far west NSW, SA and QLD. 

We are looking for a qualified Counsellor or Multi-Disciplinary Mental Health Professional (Psychology, Mental Health Nurse, Social Work, Occupational Therapist) with a passion for rural and remote mental health, to join our dynamic and innovative mental health activities. This role will work in conjunction with other RFDS medical and allied health staff in Broken Hill and be part of a pioneering mental health and wellbeing service across Western NSW. 

This Full Time role will take you to the heart of remote communities allowing you to develop close networking opportunities with the community members and pastoralists where you can develop and deliver mental health support and wellbeing activities that are locally identified to protect and support individuals, families and communities.   

Based at our Wellbeing Place, you will work alongside child and family therapists also a play therapist, alcohol and other drug clinicians, community engagement workers, doctors, nurses, dentists, aboriginal health workers and pastoralists trained as ‘peer champions’ who offer low-level mental health support to their neighbours with professional support by the RFDS and Lifeline Broken Hill Country 2 Coast. 

Your skills will be utilised to directly improve the mental health outcomes for people living in rural and remote areas, and you will be able to embrace the lifestyle and opportunities living in Broken Hill and working with the RFDS will bring.  The sky is literally the limit in terms of mental health and wellbeing service delivery options.  All ideas from the community are heard and acted upon wherever able.  We have tried it all!

We are looking for a candidate with: 
  • Knowledge of current mental health legislation. 
  • Knowledge of broad range of therapeutic assessment and intervention techniques. 
  • Ability to conduct mental health consultations by telephone, videoconference and web-based cameras  
  • Expertise in the field of counselling with individuals, couples, family and groups. 
  • Theoretical understanding of a broad range of mental health issues and social and emotional wellbeing problems such as; mental illness and disorders, domestic and family violence including child abuse, relationship problems, suicide, grief and loss, along with drug and alcohol issues. 
  • Ability to promote approaches to mental health and social and emotional wellbeing 
  • Knowledge of Community development and capacity building concepts 
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team 
  • Ability to work alone and with minimal supervision 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with external service providers 
  • Ability to use and promote effective communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work flexible hours 
  • Ability to travel frequently and for extended periods of time by road or light aircraft 
  • Current drivers licence 
Skills Required: 
  • Tertiary degree preferable with experience delivering care to those living with mental illness 
  • Postgraduate experience of at least two years or extensive experience in primary mental health care including psychotherapy practice.
