In Focus - Cancer treatment and prevention
This month's health focus is on cancer treatment and prevention and coincides with World Cancer Day on 4th February.
The message from World Cancer Day 2010 is “cancer can be prevented too” with a strong emphasis on ways to prevent cancer.
The RFDS plays an important role in preventing and treating patients with cancer who live in rural and remote areas. With a key issue in remote Australia being the incidence of skin cancer, the RFDS particularly recommends you take care in the sun and protect yourself from sunburn.

Colin Beauchamp (pictured above) is a director of the Lions Cancer Institute (LCI) and founder of the LCI mobile skin cancer screening unit in WA. The 'RFDS On the Road' Program coordinated trips by Colin and other screening volunteers (dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and dermascopy nurses) to remote communities in the Pilbara and Goldfields Esperance regions to conduct cancer screenings.
