In Focus - RFDS and Natural Disasters

December 2010 and January 2011 saw some of the most devastating flooding that has ever been experienced in parts of Australia, particularly in south east Queensland, northern New South Wales and parts of Victoria.

Only a few weeks after the flooding, northern Queensland experienced the worst cyclone on record in Australia, Tropical Cyclone Yasi. This category 5 cyclone did enormous damage as it crossed the north Queensland coast, while strong winds and floods spread to many other parts of eastern Australia.

Both of these disasters had a large impact on the RFDS, most particularly in Queensland. Every one of our 8 bases in Queensland was affected in some way, either through closures, increased workloads, or accommodating aircraft and crews relocated from other bases.

The RFDS found itself managing an inherent conflict: the need to be in the affected areas to transfer those in need out of danger, while at the same time needing to ensure the safety of employees and aircraft. Despite the obstacles, the RFDS went the extra mile to provide vital services in affected areas in the lead-up to and immediately after the events, all the while maintaining regular services.

The “In Focus” area this month features how we responded to the challenge of this summer’s extreme weather.
