Education/Training - Central Operations
Medical Training
Developed specifically to fill the gap in emergency medical training in rural areas, the RFDS Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP) provides the opportunity for doctors and nurses to enhance their knowledge and skills in emergency procedures.
Contracted by the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency to deliver the three-year program, the RFDS will provided emergency training for 300 health professionals by the end of 2008.
Following a formal review of this successful program, the RFDS has received a 12-month extension of its funding in order to train an additional 100 doctors and hospital emergency nurses in 2009.
As the GPs are one of the key elements in the provision of both primary and emergency care, educational support of this kind is essential to the future of the workforce in rural and isolated communities.
A range of other medical and nursing education programs such as the Adelaide to Outback GP Registrar Program, and RFDS-sponsored Midwifery Scholarships also continue to provide training opportunities from medical/nursing undergraduate level electives to senior postgraduate medical registrar positions.
Remote Area First Aid Training
RFDS Central Operations also run a remote area first aid training course for residents of remote South Australian communities
Student ride along program
We also run a Medical/nursing student ride along program which provides for medical/nursing students to experience RFDS operations. This program assists in our long term medical/nursing recruitment strategy.
