Nursing (Midwifery) Scholarship Program

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is offering scholarships to nurses who would like to work for the RFDS but do not have one of the areas of speciality required. Each of the four RFDS Operating Sections offers two of these scholarships each.

The funds awarded are intended to offer financial assistance towards paying for a specifically identified course.

The successful applicant will be required to complete the specified course and then work for a minimum of one year at any base within a specified RFDS Section.

Who Can Apply

Registered nurses who are midwives and eligible for registration with the Nurses Board within a specific State or Territory are invited to apply for an emergency / critical care scholarship as advertised.

OR

Registered nurses who have relevant experience or qualifications in emergency or critical care nursing and eligible for registration with the Nurses Board within a specific State or Territory are invited to apply for a midwifery scholarship as advertised.

OR

Registered nurses who have relevant experience or qualifications in emergency or critical care nursing and a midwife and eligible for registration with the Nurses Board within a specific State or Territory are invited to apply for an early childhood scholarship as advertised.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

Value of Scholarship

The level of funding eligible for each applicant is up to $10,000 per annum payable over the course of study.

Conditions
  • The funding is to cover course fees (including HECS), books required for the course, stationary costs, associated travel and accommodation costs with the remainder to cover time spent on placements.
  • The successful applicant is required to complete a minimum of one year of service with the RFDS following the completion of the specified course. This service could be conducted at any one or more of the RFDS bases within a specified Section. The location of this service is at the discretion of the RFDS Section.
  • Scholarship funding is for study in relevant funding year (s) only.
  • If you have applied for, or have received scholarship funding from any other source details must be provided and may be taken into account in the assessment of your application.
  • Applicants who do not complete the course or units of study for which they have received scholarship funding, because of withdrawal or failure to complete the course or who do not complete the 12 months service with the RFDS are liable to repay all of the scholarship funds awarded.
  • Awarding of scholarship funds is contingent on acceptance into the nominated course. No funds will be disbursed until proof of enrolment is received.
  • If your enrolment details alter from those on your original application the relevant RFDS Section must be notified in writing who will then notify the RFDS National Office as this may impact on your scholarship funding, e.g. withdrawal, deferment, or change from full time to part time study. Failure to do so may require you to refund the scholarship awarded.
  • Applicants are required to submit a copy of their results to the relevant RFDS Section at the end of each semester and at the completion of the program / course. A copy of the results will then be forwarded to the RFDS National Office by the RFDS Section.
  • Applicants are required to notify the National Office in writing of any change of address as soon as possible.
Selection Criteria
  • Registered as a General Nurse in a State or Territory within Australia.
  • Registered as a Midwife in a State or Territory within Australia (relevant only if scholar completing an emergency nursing or critical care course or early childhood course).
  • Significant relevant post graduate experience, which must include either critical / emergency nursing or midwifery or both (this criteria may alter with individual RFDS Sectional preference).
  • Acceptance into a relevant emergency / critical care or midwifery or early childhood course conducted by an approved and accredited provider.
  • A willingness to work at any RFDS location throughout the relevant RFDS Section.
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
