Airstrip Information
Well Maintained Airstrips – Vital for You!
With the operation of our aircraft across and into many remote areas and places, airstrip maintenance staff and facilities normally available at most populations centres are often not available. As a result of this, to ensure the safety of our crews and aircraft, the RFDS is VERY reliant on people in remote and isolated areas to maintain a high standard of maintenance to their airstrips. This ensures our aircraft can operate in and out of these airstrips safely, day or night and in all types of weather, to deliver the emergency services you might require at sometime.
Minimum Requirements
Due to the slightly differing operating and licencing conditions applicable to each division of the RFDS, there are slightly different minimum airstrip requirements. The general requirements are based on CAAP 92-1(1) Guidelines for Aeroplane Landing Areas which can be obtained from the CASA website. A copy is attached here for your convenience but you should check the CASA website for the latest version:

PLEASE NOTE, the Minimum Airstrip Requirements may differ slightly for the RFDS Division applicable to your particular location. You are strongly encouraged to contact your respective RFDS office directly to discuss your airstrip with their aviation staff. The requirements data for individual Divisions can be found at:
Solar Lighting
The use of solar powered lights is on the increase. Runway lights should have a visible range of at least 5km in clear weather in all directions and have a minimum stated vertical divergence of at least 10 degrees above the horizon. Professional advice is strongly advised for the design and installation of solar charged battery powered airstrip lighting systems.
