Our Patrons - Queensland
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is proud to have Her Excellency, Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland as our patron. On July 29 2008, Ms Wensley became Queensland’s 25th Governor, as previous Governor of Queensland and previous RFDS patron, Ms Quentin Bryce commenced her new role as Governor General of Australia.
Ms Wensley was born in Toowoomba and has enjoyed a rich and distinguished career in international relations, playing an important role in peace and security, economic development, social issues and humanitarian affairs.
Since joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1968, Ms Wensley has held a significant number of prestigious positions representing Australia, including most recently as Ambassador to France; as Australia's High Commissioner to India; as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva; as Ambassador for the Environment; as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York; and as Consul-General in Hong Kong, among others. In every case, Ms Wensley was the first woman to be appointed to the position.
Alongside her commitment to humanitarian and human rights issues, including the protection and advancement of the rights of women, she has a particular interest in the environment, sustainable development and HIV/Aids. Ms Wensley also has a keen interest in the Arts and in the advancement of Indigenous Australians, especially through the promotion of Indigenous art and culture.
Ms Wensley was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001 for her long and distinguished service to the development of Australia's international relations.
