The Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is made up of seven legal entities. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, four Operating Sections; Central Operations, Queensland Section, South Eastern Section and Western Operations and two fundraising entities the Tasmanian Section and Victorian Section. The RFDS operates in a federated structure and each of the seven entities has its own Board and Management. Each entity operates independently, both financially and operationally.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia
The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, is a company formed for the primary purpose of enhancing the role and functions of all RFDS entities in Australia. Its membership is comprised of two individual members and the following member organizations: RFDS Central Operations, RFDS Queensland Section, RFDS South Eastern Section, RFDS Tasmanian Section, RFDS Victorian Section, RFDS Western Operations and Frontier Services. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia was formed for the primary purpose of enhancing the role and functions of the RFDS. It provides services such as development of national policies, guidelines and standards and health programs; and the coordination of marketing, public affairs and fundraising. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia also provides central coordination for funding from the Australian Government and other national issues.
RFDS National Board
The management and control of the business and affairs of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia is vested in the National Board, which comprises the two individual members as independent directors and six directors nominated by member organisations. The National Board determines RFDS policy on national issues and is the peak body for coordinating communication with the Commonwealth Government and other stakeholders on national issues. The National Board reports annually to the members of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia in a like manner to that of a commercial board reporting to its shareholders
RFDS National Office
The National Office (office of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia & National Board) is the team within the RFDS that coordinates implementation of national initiatives with the RFDS Sections. The National Chief Executive Officer has been appointed to lead the National Office and to develop and implement national strategy and initiatives.

RFDS National Office is a Quality Endorsed business which means that our business management system has been certified by an external regulatory authority to the AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 standard.
By implementing and maintaining a Business Management System in compliance with AS/NZS ISO 9001 and complying with relevant Australian Standards and Government Legislation, RFDS National Office is committed to provide our customers and stakeholders with an efficient service by providing an environment that focuses on customer satisfaction and continual improvement across our business processes.
RFDS Operating Sections
As autonomous legal entities, operating Sections have responsibility for the delivery of the health services to the community they serve through the establishment of effective systems and maintenance of efficient operations. As presently contracted and funded, the Operating Sections must relate to various service purchasers, established both nationally and locally, and accept the financial and legal consequences intrinsic in those commercial relationships.
Note:
Sections are accountable to National Board for compliance with all national policies. Operating Sections are contractually obligated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia for delivery of Commonwealth funded services.
